How?

A friend was just told that his dad has only a few weeks left. I want to be there for him. But the situation is eerily close to my own experience.
It's bringing up all sorts of feelings of sadness and self pity that I've worked so hard to limit in my everyday life. (They tend to surface on special occasions like weddings, birthdays, and Father's Day.)
How can I help him deal without reliving my own painful experience?

Just my two cents - By helping your friend, you'll be helping yourself. Just give your friend a shoulder to lean on (or cry on.) Trust in God to bring you the right words to say, if words are needed. Let your emotions flow, and don't worry about it. Being free for yourself will probably help your friend be free, and that is probably the thing most needed. You can empathize, whereas others may not be able to do so. That's a good thing.
